More than 30 years ago Sanrio created an animated cat and named it Hello Kitty. It was originally designed by a Sanrio employee named Ikuko Shimizu in 1974 for a project for the company and the responsibility of keeping the character alive was passed on to Setsuko Yonekubo first and then on to Yoko Yamaguchi. The character first came alive on a small purse made of plastic in the year 1975 and was soon replicated on other products as well. Today Hello Kitty has become one of the most popular characters created by Sanrio and has taken the fancy of young women in Asia as well as in other places across the world. Hello Kitty has become an immensely popular symbol in the market and the marks are found on almost all kind of commodities starting from soft toys to electronics and right down to simple toothbrushes.
The Hello Kitty symbol was an immediate hit and started selling at a fast pace. Come 1976 Hello Kitty moved to America with the first Sanrio store in the United States. In the year 1990 a Hello Kitty themed park was opened in Japan and was named Sanrio Puroland. The park registers a commendable 1.4 million visitors every year. Hello Kitty was also named a junior ambassador to UNICEF recently. Not only Asia, even the west and the famous celebrities from Hollywood have started endorsing and popularizing the Hello Kitty brand now. Several Hollywood actresses have been spotted wearing Hello Kitty dresses and jewelry and even some famous actors have contributed significantly to this popular character's increasing familiarity in the western world.
